This is a terrible picture (because I took it with my phone), but I just thought I'd post a little sneak peak of what I'm working on right now. It's from a series of drawings relating to the zodiac. Got three others I'm working on right now. After I did that Capricorn drawing a while back, I figured I'd see what else I could up with. Stay tuned......

Getting comfortable with lettering

These past few weeks have been pretty productive. I worked on a T-shirt design for a skateboard company, started a few new drawings for some shows, and even dabbled with some hand-lettering. I've been meaning to try some more hand-lettering because I want to get more comfortable with it. And as everyone knows, the only way to do that is to work at it. So I've been experimenting and it's actually been pretty fun so far. I've been using ink with my nib pens and bamboo pens, then going into photoshop to clean up the lines. No vector though. I still want a bit of that handmade look. I'm hoping to add them to my website soon. Will keep you posted :)

And I'm hoping to get one of those T-shirts that I worked on, so I will post pictures of that when it arrives.

Untold Method

I was invited by the kind folks over at Untold Method to take part in their ongoing collaborative comic. A bunch of great artists illustrate the pages of this very weird story. I was happy to see that Michael Hsiung illustrated the first part of the story in his humorous trademark style. It was a first for me doing this kind of thing, and I was definitely a little wary about how it would all turn out. My experience in reading comics and graphic novels is pretty limited (Peanuts, Calvin and Hobbes, some Chris Ware stuff and a little Daniel Clowes). I wouldn't say I grew up on the stuff. There were guidelines I had to follow for the continuity of the story, and each panel was described for me, with dialogue to be inserted. A few times I had to problem solve a bit because the composition called for one character to be facing a certain direction, and my natural inclination was the opposite. But I think it all worked out ok in the end. I drew it all by hand and then scanned it and adjusted the levels/saturation in the computer. I did have to fix one panel in Photoshop where I forgot to add the text bubble. Aside from that, the original and final digital version are the same. I look forward to seeing how the story plays out. Please check it out and follow along, or better yet, spread the word!

Hopefully, I will explore comics more this year with my own stories. I think this is a good kick-start anyway.

Computer Arts Projects Magazine

Back in the fall I was asked to partake in the December issue of Computer Arts Projects. They wanted me to do a tutorial for their Character Design issue, regarding how to create an illustration using monsters. It was pretty much right up my alley, and I had a lot of freedom in what I created. The limitations were pretty much only in word counts for written descriptions and the number of steps required etc. This issue features a lot of really interesting work by great artists. I've posted some pictures below. Also, there is an animation tutorial by James Wignall using one of my characters from my tutorial. I think one of my favorite things about the issue is seeing artists sketches and initial thoughts in designing a character. It's really hard to find this magazine around where I live, so I was very pleased to get a copy sent to me by the magazine. Thanks guys :)

Pencil Sharpener

Check out this pencil sharpener I got recently. My aunt came to visit and it was a Christmas present. Here's the backstory: About 5 years ago, my grandparents both passed away. During the visit for the funeral, we stayed at my uncle's (their eldest son) house. He had all all their things laid out in the dining room and people could take things they wanted. I saw a pencil sharpener just like this one and really wanted it. Being an artist, I would surely make good use of it. For one reason or another, I didn't get it. Fast forward some years later, and my aunt gives me a very similar one to my great surprise and delight. She said it was another one that belonged to my grandfather, and this was the one that was attached to his workbench. He used to make a lot of different things, like furniture and wooden boxes etc in his spare time. So I know he used this one a lot and that made it all the more sentimental. I'm really happy I have it. Right now, I don't have anything to attach it to, but I find that if I hold it a certain way between my knees and carefully turn the handle firmly but slowly, I can make it work. Still a great sharpener, and by the looks of it, it's old. I've tried finding out exactly when these were manufactured, but no luck. But I'd say it's probably at least 60 years.

This is a drawing I made for my sister as a Christmas present. She's traveled all over the world and lived in Japan for a number of years, so I wanted to incorporate a traveler figure somehow, and of course, a GIANT rabbit too. Please don't ask me to explain that because I doubt I could make any sense of it. It's just a curiously random drawing. The title is:

Hoping everyone has been enjoying the holiday season, wherever you are!

I managed to squeeze in some time to make some Christmas presents for family members this year. For instance, I made this for my brother. He's a Star Wars fan. I figured if anything, Jabba would be really fun to draw. His dialogue translates to: "Go Work Out You Weak-Minded Burnout Scum!". Jabba doesn't really have any nice names for people, so this is what you get :)

Drawing Do-over

Back in mid-September I sent a piece of art to Romania that was purchased. Unfortunately, it never got there. It was sent as a package and I had to fill out the whole customs form etc. After several months and feeling like it was lost forever, I decided to re-draw the piece. Wasn't a big deal because it was just a small postcard-sized work, but I was nervous if this second attempt would make it there or not. This time I put it in a card-sized envelope, as if it was a letter. And guess what? It made it there in 11 days. Speedy! Glad the whole thing is over and I learned what I did. I guess some countries have more reliable postal systems that others. Here's the piece:

AMMO magazine "Monchrome"

Dave Hughes, the creator of AMMO magazine recently asked me to take part in this special edition called "Monochrome". As the name suggests, it features black and white artwork, and artists who primarily work in black and white. I've contributed to a previous issue of the magazine, and was really happy to be asked to participate again :)

December update

These past few months have been busy ones, although I don't have many blog posts to show for it. Been working on a lot of projects and works for things yet to be released. Here's the rundown:

-Just finished working on a record sleeve jacket design (a screenprint to be wrapped around a gatefold record sleeve). This is a project that has been in the works for quite a while. I worked on the cover design for the record back in 2010 I believe. Been so long I can't quite remember. But this is the final part of the project, and it should be released in the coming months.

-Worked on a collaborative comic project. It was my first time doing a graphic novel/comic strip style layout, and I would say I learned a lot in the process. However, if I make another attempt at it, I'll probably illustrate my own narrative.

-Created a postcard for the Postcards From the Edge show, hosted by Visual Aids. That's coming up soon at the beginning of January.

-Made some new images to add to my website. Trying to flesh that out a bit.

-Created a character for a collaborative project based in Venezuela.

-Made quite a few drawings/paintings for Christmas gifts.

Pink Elephants

I made this as a secret Santa gift recently for my friend Janette. Normally it's kind of up in the air when it comes to deciding what to draw for someone (when they haven't commissioned you), but this was easy. I knew she loved elephants, so I decided to draw some pink elephants from the movie Dumbo. I'm sure you remember that scene if you've seen the film. I don't know how anyone could NOT remember it. It's so wonderfully weird. I went on youtube and watched the sequence, pausing the clip to draw the elephants. Then I combined a bunch of them into this jumbled composition.

Tattoo Commission

This is a tattoo design I recently created for someone. He wanted a sitting wolf wearing a dog tag with a name on it (personal significance) and some background elements. I drew it all out in ink and did some washes, then a little assembling in Photoshop. I think it turned out pretty good. Hoping it gets inked well. Will post a picture if I get one.

With this spread I kept the idea of faces on the red page, and decided to do a cutout of the eyes. nose and mouth area that would then create a face of the opposite page.

I liked the idea of the face being a sort of surprise when you turn the page, having elements on the previous pages create the eyes, nose and teeth.

I like the image of the number 8 and the flames-like shape, so I just brought that out more. The opposite page was just an experiment with contrasting image and text that really have no connection, to create new something with a new meaning.

Had some fun playing around with the mutation of this creature. I kept the basic colors and just adding some contrasting blues and environmental elements. Who doesn't like pink shoes?

Despite having no arms, this guy is pretty happy. Maybe he's just content in his underwear and crown.

I liked the border Santiago made, so figured a blue cat mummy would be a good thing to fill it with. That and some pink eye orbs on the other page.

Had some fun fleshing out the basic face that Santiago provided. Gave him arms, pockets, and a nifty striped shirt :)

before and after pictures......

The left page was kinda blank, so I just made the background gray and then decided I wanted to paint something yellow over top of it. I like that combination. The fish just kinda came to mind, and then the text is taken from a short story by one of my favorite authors, Shirley Jackson. On the other page, "P" is for "pink" or "people" or maybe even puke (hmmm....not sure about this).

The face on the left page was just begging to be made into a skull. The rest of the body just kinda followed. I added the eyeballs later. Makes him kinda kooky looking. The green creature on the right makes me think of a flying grape or something. Maybe I was hungry.....and the yellow iguana was cut out of an old science book. I colored it.

This one I just kinda colored the hell out of. The little figure to the far left is cut out from an old stamp, and the whole text I added at the end. It's from Macbeth. I thought the guy looked kind of kingly......but doomed too.

Santiago Uceda/Jon MacNair Sketchbook Collaboration - Part 1

So I think I have mentioned this before, but I am doing a sketchbook collaboration with fantastic illustrator, Santiago Uceda. Santiago came up with the idea and I suggested we trade sketchbooks so we could work on them simultaneously and each have one to keep. Because we are both pretty busy working on paid projects etc, this got pushed to the back burner for a long while, but I finally got a bit of time to work on it, and I pretty much went full speed ahead. Once I started, I had a lot of fun with it. I played with a lot of color and used acrylic paints, something I don't do too often. I think the nice thing about a collaboration is you already have a starting point when working with the other persons share of art. It's also really cool to see a melding of two styles. I'm posting some before and after pics on here. Since this is Santiago's book, the "before" pictures are his work and the "after" pictures are mine. I have a whole bunch of pages done, but I will be posting a few pics at a time. Hope you enjoy!

New work - "Ravished"

This is a piece I completed last month for the "Nature of the Beast" show at Flatcolor Gallery in Seattle. I had a few small works going into the show, and I thought I should also have a larger more intricate piece as well. Something you could really spend some time looking at. It took a while to get the whole composition figured out, and finalize all the details of the various creatures. I had an inspiration for this piece, which was the temptation of Saint Anthony. If you have seen images of this in art, you'll know what I'm talking about. Often this scene consists of a bunch of demons clawing and pulling at Saint Anthony in mid air. A pretty striking image. I've always remembered it and wanted to pay some sort of tribute to that. This was a fun piece to do despite the time crunch I was under. I had a lot of textures to draw, so that was probably the main thing I had to consider, next to the composition. It's a lot of figures and they are very much interlocked together, so sketching it out was my least favorite part. If you live in Seattle, head on over to Flatcolor and have a look :)

Tarot card drawing for the "Bewitching" show at Stranger Factory

Here is one of my new drawings I did for the show. It's based on the 'Devil Card' from a Tarot deck. It's an iconic image that has been illustrated in many ways throughout history. A busy month

I've been really busy this month! Not only did a take small trip to Louisiana to visit relatives, but I've been occupied with a multitude of projects, shows and freelance jobs.

I just finished a freelance job for Computer Arts. I'll be excited to see how it all comes out. They are combining the tutorial I did with another tutorial done by an animator. Pretty cool.

I also had three shows open this past week in Portland, Albuquerque and Seattle.

I completed a commission that had been on the back burner for a while now (see "Saints Commission" blog post)

I finished a piece for a skateboard art show where I painted a blank deck with acrylics. I don't usually work with acrylics or paint on wood, so it was a different experience for me. It kind of got me in the mood for painting on more wood, so maybe I will give that wood panels I have a try.

I've been working on a sketchbook collaboration this week. I've had the sketchbook for a while but haven't had much time to work on it. But this week I dove in and am having fun with it!

I have some more shows coming up that I need to create more work for. One in Culver City and one in Albuquerque. I'm also working on another piece for the annual Postcards From the Edge show in NY (early January). I always participate in that, and I figure it doesn't hurt to get it done early. Things get crazy around December.

I am also waiting for some projects and publications to be released. There is a record album I did the artwork for that should be coming out this fall.

And most recently I have been asked to do a tattoo design commission and a comic strip panel. So there is a lot of stuff going on right now. And I'm sure I left out something in that long explanation. I'll probably think of it later......

Monsterbation 2 Show: Monstrously Erotic

Just wanted to post some pictures of the recent "Monsterbation 2" show at Pony Club Gallery in Portland. Jason Fischer has assembled a great group of artists once again for an erotic art show of monsters and creatures.

Here is a scan of my piece for the show. I paid homage (or parody?) to the famously bizarre painting "Gabrielle d'Estrees et une de ses soeurs" by an unknown artist. Ironically, the painting to which I am giving nods to has nothing to do with eroticism, but more fertility and motherhood. You can read more about that HERE if you are interested. Upcoming NY show

Saints Commission

This is a drawing I was commissioned to do by a relative. He wanted an image of Saint Francis and Saint Clare, with specific symbolic elements included. The bricks and the birds are examples of this. I looked at many different references for the figures, including statues and paintings of the saints. With the trees, I wanted to create a reference to the medieval arch that appears in much art from that period.

Got my work cut out for me

Been drawing like a madman lately, usually about 15 hours a day. I think it may be taking a toll, but it won't be for much longer so that's good. I sent off two shipments of art today. One box is going to Oregon and the other is going to New Mexico. I just finished a pretty intricate piece today for a show in Seattle at Flatcolor gallery, where I have enjoyed showing before. So pleased they asked me back! I will be sending then 4 pieces very soon (probably another trip to UPS on Monday). So I still have to scan this sucker and I already cut plexi glass for it (not risking it with the real glass this time). I have been hurrying to get it done because the show is quickly approaching. In fact, the three shows I have mentioned are all in the first week of October (two on the 6th and one on the 7th I believe). Not only that, but I got a freelance job to work on this past week and I knew I would have to get this gallery stuff done first because it has to travel across country. But the freelance job deadline is pretty soon too, so I guess I have my work cut our for me after I finish scanning and framing this piece. By the time that freelance job is over, I should be just about ready to leave on a trip for Louisiana. I hope that's how it all works out anyway.

Things have been so crazy lately with projects. And it doesn't help that I have been getting these waves of afternoon sleepiness where I just want to lay my head on the pillow. And there's no good reason for this. Maybe I have a vitamin deficiency (even though I take vitamins). I've been invited to partake in quite a few shows lately, with a bunch coming up in October. Perhaps this is because it's the month of Halloween and a lot of these shows have kind of dark themes (?). I'm grateful to be in these shows, but I just need to put the nose to the grindstone to get the work done. I always do in the end, so it should be fine.

Debut of my brand NEW website!

Alright folks, the time has finally come to let you know that I have a new website up! It was WAY overdue, and after about 2 years of feeling guilty for my sadly outdated and dead looking site, I got it together and worked long and hard to put this new one up. I had a ton of help from my friend Reid who thankfully knows all about these things. Thanks Reid! We live in different states, so we were doing this all on the phone and via skype. But after about 6 sessions we finally wrapped things up late last night.

I made a site years before, but that was purely in the design view of dreamweaver and there were many little things that were never quite right. I was also using some horrible tables and framesets, pop-up windows, and bad fonts.......ugh, the list goes on and on. Every time I would see that I was getting traffic to my blog or flickr from my site, I would cringe a little. Not only did the site design need to be updated, but the content did as well. Here is what the old site looked like (note the outdated pop-up window):

The challenge with making the new site was learning styles, html and getting comfortable looking at code in general. It wasn't my cup of tea for sure, but I did learn a lot in the process. That said, I don't need to hear the word "div" for a while.

I have a lot of new content on the site. The illustration page (which is the homepage) pretty much has all new content on it. The info page has a bunch of links to interviews I have done and sites of nice people who have featured my work online. There's also a few links to places where you can buy my work as prints, a flickr link, and a totally updated resume you can download. The overall look of the site is very simple. I wanted it to be easy to navigate and streamlined, with a white background to make the artwork the focus and plain black and gray text. No frills.

As soon as I get some more content I am going to switch out a few of the illustration pieces, but I am pleased with the way it looks at the moment. At least my phone number is correct now!

By the way, the "coming soon" piece in the upper left-hand corner is an album cover that is soon to be released. I will of course post about that on here when it comes out.

Just thought I'd give a brief update as to what has been going on lately. I finished the patterns I was working on earlier and I'm happy with them (being a first attempt and all). I am working on a piece right now for an October group show in New Mexico. It's going pretty well so far. I've been trying not to get too distracted thinking about the other pieces I need to do after this one. Just concentrate on one thing at a time here.

Oh, on a different note, I'm really excited to say that Blanket magazine's first printed issue is coming out soon (and I'm in it!). I need to order myself one asap. There's a great lineup of talent included (5 of the artists I recognize and am fans of). This is my 3rd time being involved with an issue of Blanket (twice previously in their PDF format). Mid-August update

I haven't written a post in a while, so I just thought I would give you all a heads up on what's been happening. I got back from vacation a few weeks ago and have been working on some new self-initiated illustrations. See, I'm trying to get my website updated because it's been grossly neglected for a long time now and I need to do something about that. Because I had some major problems with my hard drive earlier in the year and my computer had to be wiped clean, I'm using this as a good reason to start over and redesign my website. I could download the old files, but I want to try my hand at learning some html this time, as daunting as that seems. I already have an idea of what I want my site to look like, and now I am concentrating on creating more content for it. Most of the stuff on there now in terms of illustration is going to be removed because I want to project a slightly different style with my freelance illustration, more similar to my fine art style. That seems to be what more people gravitate towards anyway. I'm working on 8 pieces right now, 4 of which are pattern designs (something new to me). All that will go up on the site after it's completed. I also have some collaborations to work on and a personal project I have been invited to do from an illustrator friend. Crazily enough, in the last few weeks I have been invited to participate in 5 group shows (3 of which are in October). Some are galleries I have worked with before, and some are new to me. I also have a personal commission put on backburner at the moment (for a relative) and some publications I want to submit work to. I'm just trying to focus right now and make a list detailing all this with dates etc. My head feels full.

G40 Art Summit sales

I've been getting a lot of artwork back from shows lately. For some reason, all the galleries decided to send stuff back in the last few weeks, so I've been trying to get an idea of what pieces I have and what is still out there. Anyway, I was happy to see that I sold a few pieces at the Art Whino show (G40 art summit) in DC. I know that it was a huge show located in a warehouse space, so I didn't know if my work would get lost in the shuffle or not (I had all small works). But luckily some people liked the work enough to give it a permanent home. Always a happy feeling when that happens. Two of the pieces were very small and a couple years old, and the other was larger and more recent.

Final Voyage of the Elders

In terms of corresponding the image to the music in the "Rite of Spring" if I had to choose I'd say this goes with the Introduction music to part 2 of the ballet.

Procession of the Hunters and Scavengers

This is piece 2 of 3 for the "Ritual" show at Causey Contemporary. The whole idea was sort of based on the idea of an annual harvest/hunt. A lot of medieval art depicts scenes of hunts, and this is paying a bit of homage to those images. This piece was challenging because of the large number of objects, animals and figures in the work. Also, quite a few of these things are overlapping, so that took a bit more planning in the sketching stage. I also thought it would be fun to have the girl as the only figure looking directly at the viewer. As I spoke about yesterday, my drawings for the show were also inspired by the ballet music "The Rite of Spring". If I had to choose what part of the music corresponds with my image, it would probably be the scene titled "Ritual Action of the Ancestors." Pretty fitting!

Back from hiatus update

Hello all,

I recently got back from a two week vacation in beautiful Vermont, hence the lack of posts lately. The weather was great, although abnormally hot for the state. I took tons of pictures and spent a lot of time outside the second week when I was staying on lake Champlain. I even worked on some new drawings during the two weeks. A nice trip overall.

Anyway, now that I'm back, I thought I would post a new piece that is currently in the "Ritual" show in New York (at Causey Contemporary). This is one of three pieces on display there. I'll post the other two in the next few days.

The show opened while I was in Vermont, but I got some pictures from Trystan (of the Honeycomb Collective) of the opening and setup of the show. I will post those this week sometime.

As the show title states, "Ritual" was the theme. This piece is called "Reawakening of the Long-Departed", which is pretty self-explanatory. I was inspired by the music of the ballet "The Rite of Spring" by Stravinksy for all three of my works. Pretty fitting since the music is about a ritualistic human sacrifice. Not only the music itself, but the titles of the scenes were an inspirational source. I didn't create the works based on specific parts of the music, but after I completed the pieces I went back and listened the music again and tried to pick out what scenes fit my imagery. That was kind of fun, if not a little difficult. I decided this drawing was best suited to the scene called "Mystic Circles of the Young Girls". Have a listen to that part of the recording (if you have one) and hear for yourself.

George (R.I.P.)

This is a picture I did for my aunt (the same one I did the house drawings for) of her dog George. He was put down a few summers ago at a very old age. I took the picture for which this drawing is based on the last time I saw him. He was a golden retriever, and at the time of the photo, his muzzle was quite white, being so old. I've gotten pretty good at drawing dogs and cats in charcoal. I used several different kinds of it: compressed (my teachers would be scolding me), vine, and charcoal pencil. The compressed is great for those really dark areas, like the mouth and places with hard shadows. The vine charcoal is good to lay down as a base when you are first starting the drawing. It can be erased easily and provides nice light values. And the charcoal pencil is good for bringing out details in the fur and around the eyes and mouth. The best thing for highlights is your eraser. I used a kneaded eraser and a white rubber eraser. You can just lift off the charcoal to help give the illusion of shine on the fur. For this kind of drawing, your eraser is your best friend. I sole reason I enjoy doing these types of drawings is because of the reaction and appreciation you get from pet owners. They love seeing their animals immortalized on paper.

Architectural Surprise - part 3

So here is the final of the 3 drawings of the house. Again, lots of straight lines and little details that are vital, if you are familiar with the space. The fishing net hanging on the wall, the dangling coil of rope, the boat oars stored up in the ceiling, the big ball underneath the desk, and the boat cushion behind the lawn chair. All these things are unique to the place, and without them it would look rather sterile. I stressed out about drawing the net because obviously a bunched up net is a little tricky to draw. So I had to simplify it enough so I could draw it, but not make it look unrealistic. I did my best. After drawing all those straight lines, I had a more relaxed time with all the foliage outside the house, but I had to make sure the values were not so similar to the interior, that they blend in. I was also rather pleased with how the pattern on the chair came out. It was a vine-like/floral pattern, and again I had to do a bit of an impressionistic spin on it, but I think it worked out.

Hope you enjoyed seeing my more traditional side. I don't bring it out very often, but it can be an interesting change once in a while.

Architectural Surprise - part 2

Here we have drawing number 2 of the 3 I recently completed. This is one of the interior views of the porch. The most challenging thing about this one was all the furniture, particularly the chairs of different sizes and styles. I was however pleased with how the lamp turned out, as well as the door. Lots of little details to notice in this one. Tomorrow I will post the last of the 3 drawings (the other interior view). Stay tuned....

Architectural Surprise - part 1

Here's something you might not expect from me. It's a drawing of a house, realistically executed in pen and ink wash. The house itself has been in our family for many decades, and is located in North Hero, Vermont on Lake Champlain. My father and his siblings spent summers here growing up, and I spent many there myself. After my grandparents passed away, the house passed on to their children, and my aunt is the one who now maintains the house. It has been recently renovated, and this back porch is no longer there, having been converted into more of a living area. My aunt commissioned me to do three drawings of the house. One of the rear exterior and two of the interior of the porch. So this is the exterior view. It was done using reference photos I took two summers ago. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. I enjoy certain things about it, like the chimney and little triangle of roof visible to the right, and also the bush to the lower right. The bike was a challenge and all the straight lines nearly drove me crazy. I did not use a ruler while drawing with the ink because I was using a dip pen with a nib. But I think the slightly uneven quality of the "straight" lines adds to the hand-drawn look. My technique with the ink wash is pretty much how I always do it with all my fine art and illustration work.

Hey all,

So I went to the UPS store today (a place I am very familiar with at this point) and mailed the work I created for the Rituals group show this summer in NY. I'm sending it off a little bit early because I will be taking a little trip this week and don't want to have to rush deliver it when I get back. I think the pieces look good in the frames. I'm curious how it will all be displayed. I have an idea in my head, but I know the gallery might have ideas of their own. Either way, I'm excited. Above is a teaser pic of the works for the show. I am currently trying to finish up some personal commissions. They've been pretty challenging because they are not the type of thing I usually do, and haven't exactly been fun, but I am on schedule. I'll post pictures next month.

I will be taking some time off soon and flying to MD for a little rest and relaxation. I'm going to take the sketchbook with me and hopefully do some drawing in it.
