New Work Area

My Website Makeover (FINALLY)

I've been working on and off on my website for the past couple of weeks now. It was in dire need of an update and general makeover. I tried to streamline it a bit more, eliminating the splash page and main/homepage. Even though I sort of enjoyed the splash page, I decided it was probably just more unnecessary clicks of the mouse. Apparently, art directors are put off by splash pages or any other pages that are not right to the point. I can understand that. So now my index page takes you right to the good stuff, the work. I have taken some older images off the work page, as well as added some new art and illustration. Some of the thumbnails have been made over, as well as the buttons that go to the different sections. The work is categorized differently now, dividing it into four sections. One of these sections is new and contains some examples of my fine art/personal work from the past year. Also, I fixed the link to my blog, which used to go to my old blog (my drawing-a-day blog which ended last year and I haven't posted to in forever). Now that link goes to this blog, Scritchy Scraps, which I update pretty regularly with news and images. The info page is pretty much the same, but I changed up the bio a tiny bit to mention my gallery/fine art experience and added some new things to the links section. I also now have a CV available, which is much more detailed than the bio alone.

Carpaccio Magazine and Creep Machine interview

Recently I was asked to be a featured artist on the Creep Machine website. "The Creep Machine is a webzine dedicated to alternative, underground, outsider, lowbrow or pop surrealism art." Two artists are featured every month. I am really happy to be featured with Jason Hernandez, an amazing artist. I definitely wouldn't mind having some of his paintings skills. Also, Carpaccio Magazine's 2nd issue is now online. The theme for this issue is "Fear Values Traveling." "Carpaccio Magazine is a monthly online publication and a quarterly print publication created to promote the work of 'uncooked' artists: emerging but very tasty artists. Published work includes illustration, photography, drawing and others -as music, poetry, diy designs, etc."

Fenario Gallery "Menace to Propriety" show

Just thought I'd post some pictures from the show. I didn't get to attend this event unfortunately, but my friend Ellen went in place of me and reported back. She also took these pictures so I could see how it turned out. There's a few good ones of people looking at my work, which is always nice to see. These are some of the best photos. Enjoy.

More submissions

I've been trying to get involved in more projects, and have therefore been doing a lot of art submissions. One thing I just submitted to today is a zine run by Test Everything (Rand Renfrow). The theme was "I'll see you in my dreams" and the final product will be a screenprinted zine. I don't think I've ever been part of a zine before. I'm pretty excited to see if my work will be in this and what other work was submitted.

I also sent some stuff to A5 magazine again (the theme was "hero"), Interstizi magazine (the theme was "ethereal"), and Carpaccio magazine (theme was "traveling."

Also, just found out about a very cool project in the UK called "Mail Me Art 2" that I would love to participate in.

Göoo Magazine

Oh, I also forgot to mention that the other day I found out my work will be featured in the next issue of a wonderful art magazine called Göoo!

"Göoo Magazine is an editorial project for those eyes who enjoy the visual arts and graphic expression. A diverse gallery of designers, illustrators and artists around the world for delighting the imagination.

Göoo is characterized by merging different trends of visual arts with an specific theme developed along its pages. The editorial line is based on a fresh and unprejudiced communication, with a broad conceptual and aesthetic freedom that allows us to experiment in their materiality and content."

This issue's theme was witchcraft. I'd never submitted to Göoo before but this theme was too good to pass up, as everyone is always telling me my work has satanic undertones (eh....go figure...).

I'm excited about seeing the artwork that made it into the issue. There are some really great people included in this!

First show in Oregon

This week I just barely made the deadline to submit to "Menace to Propriety", a group show in Eugene, Oregon at the Fenario Gallery. I am happy to say that my submission was accepted and I will have 2 drawings in the show. I think there will be around a dozen artists featured in this exhibition. Unfortunately, I won't be able to go to this since it is really far away and happening quite soon, but my friend Ellen who lives in Portland is going to check it out for me and report back. From what I've seen online, the space is quite nice!

Well, I got my three works that I sent to La Luz de Jesus Gallery (Los Angeles) back today. I appreciate how prompt they were in sending the work back and how professionally it was all handled. Very nice. So now I'm thinking ahead to the show at Double Punch in San Francisco in July (date got pushed back) and this show in Eugene, Oregon that I want to be part of. The deadline for that is in May. I will probably use something already framed for that if I get accepted, and save the newer works for San Fran.

I finished another small drawing today that might go into that show. It was an experimental drawing in that I used tea as ink to color certain parts of the drawing. I think if the paper I had been using was less yellowed with age, the color would have shown up better (I had to do about six layers of tea to make it stand out) but overall I was happy with the effect. I am definitely going to continue to try using tea as pigment in the future. Maybe different colors too.

Out of Order show at Maryland Art Place

Here are some pictures I took at the "Out of Order" show that happened at the Maryland Art Place on Friday. It was a very impressive turnout, although I think many of the attendees were artists. The place was absolutely packed like sardines which unfortunately made it somewhat difficult to look at the artwork. The event lasted 3 hours and we stayed nearly to the end. By the time I left, I didn't see many works that had been bid on. I'd say maybe 1/4 of the art had bids, and most of those pieces were priced extremely low to begin with. Most were under $100, some were even as low as $1.00. I ran into more people I knew than I expected, but it was nice to catch up with people, and just to know that people are still making art.








This piece was done by a woman who took part in a photoshop workshop Reid and I gave at Johns Hopkins through the Baltimore Museum of Art.

MAP (Out of Order)

This is the piece I have selected to go in the "Out of Order" show at the Maryland Art Place. I switched out the frame that it was in before with this one and I think it looks better. I'm excited to see what other work is in the show on Friday and the things people will be bidding on.
