Long Overdue Update

Sorry I've been off the radar a bit as of late. I guess first off I should announce that I have moved from Michigan to Portland, OR. So that's kinda a big thing. It was a big move anyway....and things have been good so far!

All the chaos leading up to the departure was pretty crazy and I will spare you the details. I'm still in a bit of a transition because I don't have a permanent residence yet, so "my studio" is in boxes essentially. But I have been keeping up the work flow to the best of my ability. This is mostly because of the fact that I had to get ready for a show in CA, the "Welcome to the Freak Show" show coming up in a few weeks at WWA Gallery. 20 pieces will debut for the show, and I'm HOPING they will make it there all intact.

Right now the G40 Art Summit, of which I am participating, is going on in Richmond, VA. So if you are out that way, you should definitely check it out. Looks like they have some pretty awesome murals in additional to all the other art.

A bunch of other show invitations have popped up this month, and I really would like to try and do them all. Two of the shows are big, and two are small.

And as soon as this show at WWA opens, I will have much new art to show you all, so please stay tuned.

So now that I have just finished up a big batch of work for this show, I am back to doing some boring contracts/paperwork stuff. Not fun, but necessary. I'll try to be better with updating, which I'm sure will happen once I'm settled in a place.

until then....

The Pizza Show

I recently got to see "The Pizza Show" at Pony Club Gallery in Portland. It was a deliciously cheesy display of slices in various forms :) Can't wait to see the next show, which I believe has to do with ghosts.

Sneak Peek for upcoming spring show

yet another sneak peek of a drawing for a new show coming up. Hope you aren't all getting sick of these teasers...

G40 Art Summit 2012 - coming up!

I'm participating in this upcoming show. I have some new works debuting as well :)

Month Long 500+ Low Brow Art Exhibits, Musical Performances and

10 Block Mural Project featuring 12 of the top muralists from around the globe.

Art Whino returns in 2012 for the Third edition of G40. Following the mission of G40s past, we will once again bring exposure to low brow’s many faces and, as always, present what new facets emerge within this ever growing movement. This year G40 focuses on the "Art of the Mural". In the last 5 years, there have been great bursts of street artists transforming the city’s urban fabric with large scale mural artwork. With their powerful and awe evoking size of over five stories high, these murals transform the landscape of the passerby and create a unique experience to each wall that was once blank and artless.

This year’s G40 will travel to Richmond, VA. and will become the inaugural opening event of the city’s soon to be announced official art district. By inviting 12 of the top mural artists from around the globe to unleash their creativity to 20 large scale walls in a 10 block radius, it will surely become amazing artistic destination point for years to come. In addition to the large scale murals, we will also present an exhibit in pop up galleries along the main street of the district. With canvas work and installations by each mural artist, these shows will offer the opportunity to experience a more personal scale and a closer look at the execution and detailing of the mural artists' work.

As in previous years, we will also present a 500+ artist exhibit that will highlight all the genres within the low brow style. This year though instead of concentrating the show in one building we will be in 8 different locations throughout the arts district with an exhibit of more that 50,000sqft in total. In this exhibit we will showcase all the genres within low brow, in this way highlighting the growth of this movement and the versatility of these artists. We will also premiere "Weapons of Mass Change", a traveling group show to benefit humanitarian missions around the world. Each artist will be transforming weapons, once used to oppress, and re-skinning them as unique works of art in the vain of helping humanity.

All of these shows combined will activate 10 city blocks with the large scale murals, over 8 storefronts housing the massive G40 Group show and premiering the weapons of Mass Change traveling exhibit. In this way, the G40 Summit will leave its mark on Richmond’s Art District. This show will become a part of the city’s arts culture, which will be further established as the Mural Project becomes a yearly event for the district, creating continuity and in turn helping to solidify Richmond as a major art destination in years to come.

In addition, Art Whino will make its mark in Richmond’s art scene by joining forces with RVAMagazine to create a new quarterly publication called "WHINO". This magazine will focus on all aspects of the Low Brow culture worldwide. The premiere of the magazine will be launched during the G40 and will bring attention to the inauguration of the Art District with a month long schedule of Musical performances and events.

It all starts at the end of March. More specific dates for things can be found at the link below.

"No Bad Deed Goes Unpunished" framed

Just thought I'd post this picture. My friend Ellen owns this and she got it matted and framed recently. Looks good on the gray wall too (sorry about the bad glare on the photo). I think this work is from 2008...

Woody

I drew this portrait of Woody from Toy Story recently as a birthday present for my friend's son. It's watercolor and ink. While drawing him, I realized how much detail he has. His whole costume is comprised of different patterns, textures, stitching and many little touches, right down to his belt buckle.

Sold this month

Sold these pieces to Ryan in Germany this month. Many of them are older works...

Bad progress picture....

This is a terrible picture (because I took it with my phone), but I just thought I'd post a little sneak peak of what I'm working on right now. It's from a series of drawings relating to the zodiac. Got three others I'm working on right now. After I did that Capricorn drawing a while back, I figured I'd see what else I could up with. Stay tuned......

Getting comfortable with lettering

These past few weeks have been pretty productive. I worked on a T-shirt design for a skateboard company, started a few new drawings for some shows, and even dabbled with some hand-lettering. I've been meaning to try some more hand-lettering because I want to get more comfortable with it. And as everyone knows, the only way to do that is to work at it. So I've been experimenting and it's actually been pretty fun so far. I've been using ink with my nib pens and bamboo pens, then going into photoshop to clean up the lines. No vector though. I still want a bit of that handmade look. I'm hoping to add them to my website soon. Will keep you posted :)

And I'm hoping to get one of those T-shirts that I worked on, so I will post pictures of that when it arrives.

Untold Method

I was invited by the kind folks over at Untold Method to take part in their ongoing collaborative comic. A bunch of great artists illustrate the pages of this very weird story. I was happy to see that Michael Hsiung illustrated the first part of the story in his humorous trademark style. It was a first for me doing this kind of thing, and I was definitely a little wary about how it would all turn out. My experience in reading comics and graphic novels is pretty limited (Peanuts, Calvin and Hobbes, some Chris Ware stuff and a little Daniel Clowes). I wouldn't say I grew up on the stuff. There were guidelines I had to follow for the continuity of the story, and each panel was described for me, with dialogue to be inserted. A few times I had to problem solve a bit because the composition called for one character to be facing a certain direction, and my natural inclination was the opposite. But I think it all worked out ok in the end. I drew it all by hand and then scanned it and adjusted the levels/saturation in the computer. I did have to fix one panel in Photoshop where I forgot to add the text bubble. Aside from that, the original and final digital version are the same. I look forward to seeing how the story plays out. Please check it out and follow along, or better yet, spread the word!

Hopefully, I will explore comics more this year with my own stories. I think this is a good kick-start anyway.

You can see a higher res version on my Flickr HERE.

Computer Arts Projects Magazine

Back in the fall I was asked to partake in the December issue of Computer Arts Projects. They wanted me to do a tutorial for their Character Design issue, regarding how to create an illustration using monsters. It was pretty much right up my alley, and I had a lot of freedom in what I created. The limitations were pretty much only in word counts for written descriptions and the number of steps required etc. This issue features a lot of really interesting work by great artists. I've posted some pictures below. Also, there is an animation tutorial by James Wignall using one of my characters from my tutorial. I think one of my favorite things about the issue is seeing artists sketches and initial thoughts in designing a character. It's really hard to find this magazine around where I live, so I was very pleased to get a copy sent to me by the magazine. Thanks guys :)

below is a better image of my finished piece for the magazine.
