Just because....

Just thought I'd give a brief update as to what has been going on lately. I finished the patterns I was working on earlier and I'm happy with them (being a first attempt and all). I am working on a piece right now for an October group show in New Mexico. It's going pretty well so far. I've been trying not to get too distracted thinking about the other pieces I need to do after this one. Just concentrate on one thing at a time here.

Oh, on a different note, I'm really excited to say that Blanket magazine's first printed issue is coming out soon (and I'm in it!). I need to order myself one asap. There's a great lineup of talent included (5 of the artists I recognize and am fans of). This is my 3rd time being involved with an issue of Blanket (twice previously in their PDF format). ANNALEMMA Magazine

A while back I did some freelance illustration for Annalemma Magazine to accompany a work of fiction. I just got the issue in the mail today! I was pleased to see how nicely it was printed and designed, and was also happy to feast my eyes on the work of fellow illustrators Paul X Johnson and Alvaro Tapia Hidalgo. My thanks go out to Chris Heavener and his team for making it such a great issue, and inviting me to take part in it :)

Planes and Parachutes

Below is an assignment I did for The Pittsburgh City Paper a while back in early October. It's basically about airlines and union problems. Not exactly the most interesting topic but I am pretty satisfied with the illustration. Lisa (the art director) did the layout and I'm happy to see the image printed so large.

Blanket Magazine

I recently submitted an image to the 12th issue of Blanket Magazine, a bi-monthly, free, PDF, art+design+photography magazine "aimed at uncovering new, emerging talent from around the world." Not only was my submission accepted, but it was chosen as the winning entry in reaction to the theme of this particular issue (travel).

Hyphen Magazine

Just wanted to post these pics of Hyphen Magazine which I currently have an illustration in. It was for the recipe section about how to feng-shui your computer desktop. I've also posted my sketch for the illustration.

Baltimore Magazine April Issue

Here's a scan my illustration from the current issue of Baltimore Magazine. The article that accompanies it is about the fear and superstition surrounding the 13th floors of hotels. I also posted the sketches for the illustration as well.

Love and Circuits

Just did an illustration for the music section of the Baltimore City Paper. The article was about the release of a 2-disc compilation entitled "Love and Circuits" with 57 tracks by 57 different artists. Below is my illustration and a scan of the final print.

Cover

Just finished working on a cover yesterday for the Pittsburgh City Paper. My original illustration of step-by-step how to draw a poor art student was used as part of a larger composition created by the art director.

Today I hope to start working on some new promo pieces to send out and put on my website. But before I do that, I need to get some more art supplies, namely pen nibs. All the ones I have are either clogged, rusted, or bent and completely useless. I wish I could buy them in bulk from somewhere.

Here's my most recent published illustration from the Pittsburgh City Paper. I posted a large image so you can read the article as well. It's pretty interesting.

Latest Published Illustration

Here is my latest published illustration in the Riverfront Times. The cheese people you see are the Suspicious Cheese Lords, or my interpretation of them. In reality they are "a male a cappella ensemble that performs concerts and provides church service music for the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area. Although specializing in music of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, their repertoire ranges from Gregorian chant to original compositions." (excerpt taken from their website)

The assignment was completely open, so I just went with it. The hardest part was figuring out a good composition in which to fit the image and text together. Below is the original and then the printed newspaper version.

Filthy Lucre

These are two clippings from the Riverfront Times featuring my illustrations. The article was about Malcolm McLaren and the direction that the hip-hop industry is going regarding the marketability of artists and their products. For one of the illustrations I used bobbleheads to show how artists can be puppets used to make money, and also as a example of the kind of useless crap that is often churned out by these artists to, again, make money. The other illustration is my imagined version of 50 Cent's cologne line.
