Tiny Pencil No. 3 - THE BEAST ISSUE

I was honored to be included in the 3rd issue of Tiny Pencil. Tiny Pencil is a great publication from the U.K. featuring graphite works by an array of talented artists from all over the world. This particular issue featured quite a few Portland artists like myself! The theme was monsters, machines and unnatural things.

these two pencil drawings were my contribution to the issue.

WOLF DOWN Album Art

Back in the spring I created some album artwork for a German band called Wolf Down. The concept they wanted illustrated was a labyrinth full of monsters and creatures. I added the elements outside of the maze to give the whole thing a landscape feeling. The maze proved to be trickier than I expected, but I think it all worked out in the end. I also created some interior illustrations for the record album.

here are some of my sketches for the front and interior illustrations:

Chicago 2013

At the beginning of December, I made a trip out to Chicago for the opening my solo show "At the Hour of Sleep" at Rotofugi Gallery. My show was alongside Travis Lamp's solo "The Cult of Chauncy". Travis and I had been in shows together but never had the opportunity to meet before. Travis lives in Chicago so I knew he would be around. My parents traveled from Michigan for the opening. It was pretty cold when we were there and the opening was kind of sparse in terms of crowds. However, it was great getting to meet Travis and nice that my parents were able to attend an opening of mine. Also, I had never really seen Chicago before, so that was a new experience. I was excited just to go to the museums! And despite the lack of people at the opening, it was my most financially successful show to date :)

Germany 2013

At the end of November I had the opportunity to travel to Hamburg Germany for an exhibition opening at Feinkunst Kruger. The show was "Don't Wake Daddy VIII" curated by the talented Heiko Muller. I had the chance to take part in "Don't Wake Daddy VII" last year and was ecstatic to be invited back again. The show was a great mix of international talent, with artists from all over the world, including a good many from the U.S. and Germany too. There was no theme to the show, so artists had free range to create whatever they wanted, and the results were exceptional.

My traveling companions were also in the show. Dan Barry and Robin Coronel from Austin. We stayed at the same hotel and did a lot of sightseeing together. We were fortunate to have excellent tour guides. Heiko took us out one day and showed us around Lubeck, and Ralf (owner of Feinkunst Kruger Gallery) gave us a grand tour of Hamburg. I had never been to Germany before, so it was a whole new experience for me. Good food, good friends, great sights. It was a short but sweet trip overall and new friends were made :)

Below are the 3 pieces I created for the show.
