Maguila 14

I have a bunch of work in issue 14 of Maguila, a PDF arts magazine based in Sao Paulo Brazil.

You can download the issue HERE and check it out!

4 previously unseen works

"In Search of a Remedy"

"A Malevolent Decree"

"Shifting Tide Pool"

"Bespeckled Creature with Feelers"

These are some pieces I had done for "New Faces" at Recoat Gallery in Glasgow (currently on display). I kept these 4 under wraps until the show opened and am posting them on here now for you to see. I've included detail shots so you can see the line work better. The other 4 pieces I sent them have already been posted on my flickr page.

One crazy month

Picture of framed pieces for "New Faces" at Recoat Gallery. Taken right before packing up and shipping out.

It's been a pretty crazy month so far. Next month will have a lot of stuff happening too. Three shows opened this month for me (Recoat Gallery's "New Faces", Tribute Gallery's "Play For Keeps" and the annual art benefit "Postcards From the Edge"). I also completed and sent out work for two shows (WWA Gallery's "The Devil Made Me Do It" and Launch Pad Gallery's "LOVE" show - both of which will be opening middle of next month). I just finished my piece for "The Portland Project" on Society6.com and uploaded it today. They are going to be printing the prints and having a show of them in Portland in March. Also sold one drawing to a friend, did 3 zine submissions, an interview and finally got postcards made.

I had some snags in sending my work to Scotland for the "New Faces" show at Recoat Gallery, which presented a somewhat stressful situation, although it ended up okay. I had to order frames for the work online because 1.) I wanted a discount price to save money. and 2.) I wanted to get frames that did not have glass fronts in them to reduce the risk of damage on the way to the show. I had previously had problems with broken glass with a show I did in San Francisco this past summer where one work got damaged, and I didn't want this repeated. So I ordered the frames, but should have left more time for this as it took a little longer for them to deliver than I expected. The day I got the frames I packaged up all the artwork immediately and sent it off the next day. There were 2 boxes (one of 3 large works and one of 5 small works). The price of shipping was astounding to me. I could do 2-4 day delivery, which would have gotten it there in plenty of time, but the cost was TWICE as much as the 6-10 day. 6-10 would get it there just in time for the day they wanted to hang it, and as that was more affordable (yet still expensive) I opted for the 6-10. Only problem with this was there was no tracking option for the 6-10. If I wanted tracking I had to do the 2-4 day massively expensive option. Well, the 15th passed, the day I had wanted the work to be there, and still nothing. The 20th came and I finally heard that ONE box had arrived. The gallery said it had been held in customs and they had to pay to receive it. No sign of the other box. Keep in mind the show is set to open in 2 days. The next day nothing arrives. Finally, the day of the show, the gallery gets word that the other box just arrived at the post office, where they rush to get it. The work goes up on the walls hours before the reception, and the rest is history. During the whole thing, I kept going back and forth at feeling angry at UPS, customs, and myself, not really knowing who to place blame on, but it all worked out in the end, so I guess it doesn't really matter. I'm really learning some lessons from these types of things though.

When I come across some pictures from the opening, I'll post them on here.

New Interview with me on "Party Like An Art Star"

Recently I was asked to do an interview by Chloe Gallagher, a curator in Oregon who I have worked with on two occasions, one being the current show in Portland (Play For Keeps). The interview was written for her blog "Party Like an Art Star." Check it out!

Feeling tired but accomplished today. I just got back from the post office where I had to mail a package to California. It's some artwork for "The Devil Made Me Do It", a show in Culver City at WWA Gallery. I had a lot of stuff going on this past month and thus far this month too, but I managed to make a piece for the show, and I feel happy with what I created. Another red check goes on the to-do list.

A few days ago I did these two drawings for Pragazine. The theme was "plagiarism" and this is what I came up with. If you look closely at the time and care I put into these two drawings, you will really see that I love Disney, as opposed to what your initial assumption might be.

Also did this sketchbook drawing for a zine called "Smile You're Not Dead"

12 hour drawing day

Spent all of today working on a piece for a show in California. I took a brief dinner break to eat 3 tacos and then it was back to work. Also, talked on the phone, which I can luckily do while drawing. Really tired now and kinda sore from sitting in the chair all day. I wish it was a bit less snowy outside because I could have gone for a walk to stretch my legs. Oh well. It's melting slowly. Tomorrow I will finish up the drawing, scan it, and package it to ship. Hopefully.....

"New Faces" @ Recoat Gallery in Glasgow

Hey everyone!

You've probably heard me mention this in previous entries, but I will be showing work in a gallery in Scotland this month. Very excited! Recoat Gallery in Glasgow in proud to present "New Faces", a show that centers around character design.

Opening reception is on the 22nd of Jan 2010, 7-10pm

I have sent them 8 pieces for display. 4 of them are relatively new and have been posted on my flickr page, and 4 are totally new and have not been seen by anyone (2 are in color and one is fairly large (for me) and detailed).

Just got the flier from them today. Here it is!

The works are signed on the back and exhibited so the artists' signatures cannot be seen. While buyers receive a list of all participating artists, they don't know who created which piece until purchased. All proceeds support the work of Visual AIDS.

Visual AIDS utilizes art to fight AIDS by provoking dialogue, supporting HIV+ artists, and preserving the legacy -- because AIDS IS NOT OVER!

"Play For Keeps" - two works

"Capture the Flag"

Feeling much more refreshed today :)

Last night was the opening reception for the show at Tribute Gallery in Portland (I was absent). So here I am going to post pictures of the two pieces I have in the show (kept mostly under wraps until now).

Kind of a crazy day today....

Lots of stuff happened today, most of which I am too tired to type right now, but some of it was really good.

The Tribute Gallery show ("Play For Keeps"), in which I am participating, is having their opening reception tonight. Wish I could be there, but again, it's on the other side of the country. One of these days I will get to go to an opening...

My website is getting a lot of traffic lately, and the jump is making me question the source of this. Wish I knew more. That's good though!

Well, my brain is fried. Time for bed.

Lots of Art for Sale!

Recently added some more pieces to the "Art For Sale" section of my Flickr page. Plenty of stuff there so take a peek!

A good day for drawing

Finished all the work to submit to La Luz De Jesus annual group show today. I got two drawings completed in one long afternoon. It seems like it took me forever with all this stuff popping up that needed my attention. Oh well. At least I can put a nice big red check mark on my to-do list.

Next I have another piece I need start for the show in Culver City, CA coming up. Also have two zine submissions to do, and the Portland project to work on.

This is nice

Thanks Phantasmaphile!

Got another drawing completed today, ordered some postcards, and did some email catch-up. Tomorrow my goal will be to finish two drawings. Also came across some more blogs and websites that feature my work. I'm really appreciative of the mentions I've gotten on these sites, whether they are individual bloggers, publications, or design networks. It's all resulted in more exposure of my work and I'm incredibly thankful to everyone for that :)

First post of the New Year!

Hello everyone!

First off, Happy New Year to all :) I hope everybody had a safe holiday and got to spend some time with friends and loved ones. Right now I am am trying to get organized for the new year, and cut out some of my desire to procrastinate, as that is no way begin 2010.

Just wanted to let you all know that my NEW ZINE "SLACKING ON THE JOB" is now for sale at Little Paper Planes.com. I'm very happy about this because the site is just awesome and has a lot of great artwork and books and zines on it by a lot of people I admire.

It's my first zine by the way and contains a lot of sketchbook-type drawings, many from a few years ago.
